Brief Introduction to Kampala City
Affectionately known as the green city in the sun Kampala is the capital and largest city of Uganda, it’s also the commercial and administrative centre of country. Kampala was named the 13th fastest growing city on the planet, with an annual population growth rate of 4.03 percent. Kampala has been ranked the best city to live in East Africa ahead of Nairobi and Kigali.
The city sits at an altitude of 1,180m above sea level, it enjoys pleasant weather, with annual temperatures averaging 17 degrees Celsius (minimum) and 27 degrees Celsius (maximum). The history of Kampala, like that of many other cities in the world, is wrapped in both folklore and historical facts.
Before the arrival of the British colonists, the Kabaka of Buganda had chosen the zone that would become Kampala as a hunting reserve. The area, composed of rolling hills with grassy wetlands in the valleys, was home to several species of antelope, particularly impala. When the British arrived, they called it “Hills of the Impala”. The language of the Baganda, Luganda, adopted many English words because of their interactions with the British. The Baganda translated “Hill of the Impala” as Akasozi ke’Empala – “Kasozi” meaning “hill”, “ke” meaning “of”, and “empala” the plural of “impala”. In Luganda, the words “ka’mpala” mean “that it is of the impala”, in reference to a hill, and the single word “Kampala” was adopted as the name for the city that grew out of the Kabaka’s hills
In 1962 upon attainment of independence, it regained its status as the capital of Uganda. From a small hamlet occupying 19 square kilometers, it had spread to seven hills by the time of independence, earning the tag “city of seven hills”. The original seven hills are: Mengo, Rubaga, Namirembe, Makerere, Kololo, Nakasero, and Kampala (Old K’la). Today, greater Kampala stands on at least 21 hills.
Local attractions include: The Kasubi tombs – where the remains of the Kings of Buganda were buried Uganda, Uganda Museum, Nommo art gallery, National Theatre, Cathedrals – Rubaga and Namirembe, Parliament of Uganda and Independence monument.
Brief Introduction to Jinja City
Jinja is a city in Uganda, located on the northern shores of Lake Victoria in South Eastern Uganda near the source of the river Nile. Jinja city is in Jinja District, Busoga sub-region. It is approximately 81 kilometres (50 mi), by road, east of Kampala.
The city was planned under colonial rule in 1948 by Ernst May, German architect and urban planner. May also designed the urban planning scheme for Kampala, creating what he called “neighborhood units.” Estates were built for the ruling elite in many parts outside the center city. This led to the area’s ‘slum clearance’ which displaced more than 1,000 residents in the 1950s.
In 1954, the construction of the Owen Falls Dam submerged the Ripon Falls. Most of the “Flat Rocks” that gave the area its name disappeared under water as well. Jinja is commonly regarded as “the adventure capital of East Africa” due to the very many activities in town that one could engage in, especially for tourists.
Local attractions include waterfalls, white-water rafting activities, the “Source of the Nile”, Bungee Jumping, kayaking, cultural sites and so many other water activities
