Our thirst for adventure and desire for the discovery of off the beaten path experiences took us to the West Nile (North western side of Uganda) and in early 2020, we did our first successful tour to the west-nile.
On this tour, we combine it with a humanitarian gesture of one day volunteer experience at the second largest refugee settlement in the world- Bidi Bidi in Yumbe district.
This Secrets of the West Nile Tour will takes us to four districts of Yumbe, Maracha, Nebbi and Arua for adventures and nightlife experience. We visit the water falls, the pyramid- yes the pyramid in Uganda, the smallest church in the world and of course we get the best “parrrraaay” experience in the Northern side of Uganda.
West Nile gained global attention as the home of the former Ugandan president Idi Amin Dada.
GETTING TO THE WEST NILE:
We will have three groups, a participant to our west nile tour can choose the best way to reach thr starting point of the trip -Yumbe Town.
Pakwach Bridge is the main gateway to West Nile sub-region and beyond, with alternative routes being through Adjumani using a ferry and Wanseko in Buliisa District also via a ferry. A small volume of passengers pass through Obongi also using ferry from Adjumani or flying from Entebbe.
GROUP One: Fly Entebbe- Arua.
Those interested in these option will fly from Entebbe to Arua airstrip (the largest city in the sub-region), our guide will be readily waiting for you, for transfers.
GROUP Two: Roadtrip-Safari Vans
This group will start the journey from Kampala in SunTrack Adventures safari vans on an adventure filled road trip with customized and well-thought after stops and trip breaks.
GROUP Three: Public Bus
For those who would like to take the public and join us in Yumbe or Arua, the best option is the Nile Star. We highly recommend NILE STAR bus company for the best trip experience. Very new buses, good drivers, the premium (“executive”) buses have WIFI, working sockets to charge your phone or tablet, very clean and comfortable seats. It’s highly recommended.
ATTRACTIONS TO VISIT ON OUR SECRETS OF THE WEST NILE TOUR
MIRIA ADUA FALLS:
Miria Adua falls is comprised of unique steps and are of about 10 metres with short grooved slabs of hard rock surfaces.. The falls are found in Kijomoro Sub County, Maracha district at River Oluffe, the third River crossing under the Koboko Highway about 20 Minutes north from Arua City.
It is not as huge as Sipi falls in Kapchorwa, Kalagala Falls in Kayunga district nor Ssezibwa falls in Mukono but still stunning and the scenery is the perfect spot for an afternoon picnic.
The Alikua pyramid in Maracha district, the only visible surviving legacy of the nineteenth century Belgian occupation of the West Nile region.
When you mention pyramids, the only thing that rings a bell in the minds of some Ugandans, are the Egyptian ones they learnt about in primary school. Little do they know about a pyramid located in Alikua village, Yivu Sub-county Maracha district.
The bumpy and dusty half-hour ride from Arua on the dusty-potholed road leads you to the over 100year old Alikua pyramid. The pyramid was constructed by the Belgians after the signing of the 1911 agreement between Belgium and the British Protectorate.
WORLD’S SMALLEST CHURCH:
Yes, the world’s smallest church is in Uganda, Nebbi district. Bethel Chapel seats at jaw-dropping beautiful rolling hills of Biku, in Erussi subcounty in Nebbi district.
This place is BEAUTIFUL, STUNNING and RELAXING. This small chapel consumed 79 bags of cement and it was constructed to last atleast 500 years before the weakening of the foundation.
If you love faith tourism, then visiting Nebbi district is the best choice for you to catch a glimpse of the exceptional Bethel church.
BIDI BIDI REFUGEE SETTLEMENT:
If you have always wanted to help refugees, this is your time. Bidi Bidi Refugee Settlement– is the second largest refugee settlement in the world. We shall not only be visiting, but we shall render our service to help the settlers in a noble way.
People with specialized skills such as physiotherapists, counselors, social workers, photographers, bloggers are encouraged to get involved in this noble work.
Bidibidi covers 250 square kilometers of the eastern half of the district of Yumbe, stretching southward from the South Sudanese border and spilling over into Moyo District along the western bank of the Kochi River.
For nightlife lovers joining this tour, you are well sorted. We have two nights out well planned in Yumbe and Arua towns. With barbecue, beers, good music, fine d.j, we will even take part in the drinking competition and quiz nghts.
A good trip is good food, so Escape Village Hotel in Yumbe will have us sorted, they the best local and continetal dishes, yes really nice delicious meals in Yumbe. This is the place to be, to hang out with the who is who of Yumbe.
In Arua, Bamboo Village has got us sorted with great food, music and fresh drinks. Local and Continental dishes are served here.
